NOMI Forest Explorers
Our Mission
NoMi Forest Explorers is a nonprofit dedicated to cultivating a lifelong love of learning and movement through nature-based education—open to all learners, whether traditional students, homeschoolers, or children of diverse ages and backgrounds.
By blending hands-on exploration with environmental education, we inspire curiosity, foster community, and introduce pathways to future careers in the natural sciences. Through weekly forest school meetups, field trips, kitchen classroom sessions, nature education tools, Forest & Clovers Crew 4-H club, and guest presentations, we provide rich, real-world experiences that connect children with the natural world and with each other.
Beyond our regular programs, we also take field trips across the state, giving learners the chance to explore Michigan’s diverse ecosystems and communities. We partner with 4-H as well as local and regional organizations such as the Manistee Conservation District (MCD), National Forest Service (NFS), National Park Service (NPS), and many others to bring a wide variety of learning resources, expertise, and opportunities directly to our families. These collaborations ensure that our children gain a deeper appreciation of nature, discover new career pathways, and experience the power of community-based education.
Our Vision
NoMi Forest Explorers exists to create a permanent, accessible, and inclusive outdoor learning community where children and families of all ages can connect with nature, learn through hands-on exploration, and grow into curious, confident, and environmentally responsible citizens.
We believe learning happens best when it is rooted in real experiences, shared across generations, and connected to the world right outside our door.
Learning That Grows With You
We envision NoMi Forest Explorers as a regional leader in nature-based education—offering programs that blend environmental science, outdoor play, life skills, and real-world learning. Our learners engage in inquiry, experimentation, and exploration year-round, developing curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.
Our flexible, hands-on programs are designed to serve homeschool families, traditional students, and community learners alike, meeting children where they are and allowing them to grow over time.
A Welcoming Community for All
At the heart of our work is community. We are building an intergenerational learning space where families of all backgrounds, abilities, and income levels feel welcome, valued, and supported in their connection to nature.
Our programs are designed to be accessible, inclusive, and sensory-aware, fostering meaningful relationships between families, educators, and community partners. We believe diversity of experience and perspective strengthens learning and helps children better understand the world around them.
A Home in Nature
We envision a long-term home for NoMi Forest Explorers—a dedicated outdoor learning center and community hub where environmental education thrives year-round. This space will include outdoor classrooms, gardens, and shared gathering areas that support learning, collaboration, and stewardship.
By securing and stewarding land that reflects our values of conservation, accessibility, and education, we can expand our impact and ensure our programs remain sustainable for generations to come.
Growing Through Partnerships & Impact
Collaboration is central to our mission. We work alongside local and regional partners—educators, conservation organizations, scientists, and community groups—to expand learning opportunities and deepen environmental literacy.
Through shared programs, ongoing evaluation, and transparent impact reporting, we continually learn, grow, and strengthen our work while demonstrating the power of community-based environmental education.
Stewardship for Future Generations
Our ultimate goal is to raise environmentally conscious citizens who feel a deep sense of care for their local ecosystems and communities. Through family-friendly stewardship projects, youth leadership opportunities, and real-world conservation experiences, children learn that they have the power to protect and restore the natural world.
NoMi Forest Explorers is more than a program—it’s a growing community committed to learning, stewardship, and a healthier future for both people and planet.
