The 4-H Forest & Clover Club recently finished an exciting food preservation series that brought together community members eager to learn practical skills for storing and enjoying homegrown and local foods year-round. Over the past several months, club meetings took place at the School of the Woods Community (SOWC) and the Kaleva Community Club (MGTCC), where participants explored canning, freezing, drying, and fermenting techniques. Now, the club is gearing up for its next adventure: the Cooking Club, starting Friday, February 16, 2025, from 1 pm to 4 pm. This new series promises hands-on cooking experiences, new recipes, and plenty of fun.

Highlights from the Food Preservation Series

The food preservation series was designed to equip members with the knowledge and confidence to safely preserve food at home. Each session focused on a different method, with expert demonstrations and opportunities for hands-on practice.

  • Canning: Participants learned how to safely can fruits, vegetables, and sauces using water bath and pressure canning methods. Safety tips included sterilizing jars, processing times, and recognizing signs of spoilage.

  • Freezing: The club explored blanching vegetables before freezing to maintain color and texture, as well as freezing fruits and herbs for later use.

  • Drying: Members practiced drying herbs, fruits, and vegetables using dehydrators and air-drying techniques, understanding how to store dried foods properly.

  • Fermenting: The series introduced fermenting basics with recipes for sauerkraut and pickles, highlighting the health benefits of fermented foods.

The hands-on approach helped members build skills while sharing stories and recipes from their own kitchens. The community atmosphere made learning enjoyable and encouraged everyone to try new preservation methods at home.

What to Expect from the Cooking Club

The upcoming Cooking Club will build on the preservation skills by focusing on creative ways to use preserved foods and fresh ingredients in delicious meals. The sessions will run every Friday afternoon from 1 pm to 4 pm, starting February 16, 2025, at the Kaleva Community Club.
