Earth Day Trash Pick Up
April 24th 1-3pm @ Magoon Creek
Service Description
This Earth Day, we're doing something a little different. Instead of our usual planting day, we're hitting the shoreline and woods of Magoon Creek to clean up - and every piece of trash we collect will be put to good use. This year's haul will be saved and transformed into our Festival of Trees entry, turning litter into something beautiful. This is a community event, open to all - bring your neighbors, your kids, your friends. The more hands, the cleaner the creek. A craft will also be available on site - details to come! What We'll Do: 🌍 Trash to Treasure Data Collection We'll turn the cleanup into a real citizen science moment. As we collect, we'll sort trash into categories — plastic, glass, metal, fabric — and tally our finds in nature journals. A great way to connect what we collect to the bigger story of how human behavior affects wild spaces. 🪨 Petoskey Stone & Beach Glass Hunt Magoon Creek is a known spot for rockhounds! After the cleanup, kids get to enjoy the reward of a cleaner shoreline - hunting for Petoskey stones and beach glass along the water's edge. Bring magnifying glasses to examine your finds and sketch them in your journal. 🌊 Where Does It Go? Watershed Discussion Magoon Creek flows directly into Lake Michigan. We'll sit by the water and talk about how a piece of trash in the woods becomes a problem for the Great Lakes and beyond — a tangible, powerful conversation for kids and adults alike. The Bigger Picture: All trash collected will be saved and used to create our Festival of Trees tree this year — turning what we find into something meaningful and beautiful for the community to see. What to Bring: Sturdy boots or shoes you don't mind getting muddy · weather-appropriate layers · nature journal & pencil · magnifying glass if you have one · water bottle · work gloves if you have them Bags and supplies will be provided.
